G&M Services - Case Study 3

Cryogenic articulated arm modification

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Removal, modification & replacement of Cryogenic pipe work lifting arms on LNG Jetty 8 & 10.

On the Isle of Grain, Medway - 10 lifting arms in total.

In 2010 National Grid identified a problem with the lifting arms that attached to the LNG ships

that deliver gas to site. If the ships were to become detached from the lifting arm during the

pumping cycle the lifting arm attachment would detach itself from the ship leaving the

product to be pumped into the atmosphere.

A modification was designed that would reduce the risk of the operation. G&M were

contracted to carry out the work, the scope of which is:

Isle of Grain - Medway

Jetty 8 & 10 area

Removal of the lifting arm using crane barges.

Transportation of the arm to the Main site for modification.

Arm replacement.

This operation has not been carried out anywhere else G&M’s expertise and innovation has

been used to help other sites perform this project.
